I recently heard a pastor say that when God calls us to work for him, it is not because he needs us to accomplish his purpose. Rather, he is already at work and is inviting us to become a part of it. Indeed, God doesn't need us to accomplish anything. How often we get that confused - believing and acting as if God can't do it without us or find someone else just as qualified.
So why, then, does God call us to work for him? I believe the answer is because we grow when we take up these challenges that often require steps of faith. I also believe it is because through this work we will get to see God's glory - and what I beautiful thing it is to behold God's glory at work in the lives of people God has allowed us to touch for him.
The bottom line is that God calls us to step out in faith so that we can watch him work. He doesn't need us to be involved in the work to accomplish it - rather he allows us to be involved. The results are blessings that abound in our lives and in those we serve.
Mordecia and Esther where invited by God to be involved in the work he was doing to rescue his people. Mordecai had a great understanding of what is discussed above. He and Esther are a beautiful picture of faith in God's promises and sovereignty and obedience that stems out of that faith. Watch tomorrow's reading for the blessing they receive because of their obedience as we see God's plan and purpose fulfilled.
But for now, let's take a closer look at what I think is one of the most powerful passages in scripture. I won't give the background, because if you're reading, you know it. Instead, we'll jump straight into the part where Esther is invited to become part of God's rescue mission. Mordecia urges Esther to go before the King and beg for mercy for the Jewish people who are facing genocide. Esther is hesitant - understandably fearful.
The portion I'd like to focus on are Mordecai's words in response to Esther's hesitation:
"Do not think that because you are in the king's house you along of all the Jews will escape. For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father's family will perish. But who knows but that you have come to royal position for such a time as this." - Esther 4:12-14
My study notes say that the themes of the book of Esther are most clearly expressed in this passage. Mordecai's confidence that the Jews would be delivered is based on God's sovereignty in working out his purposes and fulfilling his promises. Their deliverance will come, even if through some means other than Esther. Yet that sovereignty is not fatalistic: Unless Esther exercises her individual responsibility, she and her family will perish. Here is demonstrated the relationship between divine sovereignty and human responsibility.
The summary of the lesson we can clean from this is perhaps that:
-God has a divine plan and purpose
-He invites us to participate in his plan and purpose
-Sometimes the step of obedience is frightening, but we can be assured that God is already working and will provide all we need to accomplish the task
-God's purpose who be accomplisehd with or without us
-However, we are the ones who might face consequences and certainly miss amazing blessings when we fail to take up God's calling
I pray, sweet friends, that God would lead us to a place of faith and confidence so that we might be willing to take up the calling when our "such a time as this" arrives.
Do you have a story about a time when you stepped out in faith and obedience like Esther? Share your story - and your blessing.

ReplyDeleteSome question the Book of Esther as being scripture due to fact that God isn't mentioned in the book. But as we know the wisdom of God is hidden to unbelieving minds. The Book of Esther is another wonderful book showing the wisdom of God toward hurting mankind. This book outlines the future of God's new plan getting ready to unfold with the birth of our Lord Jesus. Like the story of Joseph, the Book of Esther foreshadows the work of God's redemption plan for mankind. I hope you enjoy the forshadow. I'll break it up in several posts due to the size.

ReplyDeleteThe Book of Esther
There was a great king who reigned in great power and glory. This King ruled over many nations. To show His glorious Kingdom and excellent majesty he decided to hold a huge feast. All the princes and nobles were called to the feast. At this great feast and celebration, the King beckoned his wife to come into His presence but she would Not. Through her stubbornness and rebellion she would not heed the King’s command to come before him.
Ps 81:11
"But My people would not heed My voice, and Israel would have none of Me.
The King was furious. He commanded her to be put away and for a new wife to be found.
Matt 22:8-10
8 "Then he said to his servants, 'The wedding is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy.
9 'Therefore go into the highways, and as many as you find, invite to the wedding.'
10 "So those servants went out into the highways and gathered together all whom they found, both bad and good. And the wedding hall was filled with guests.
The King’s servants were sent through out the kingdom to search the highways and the byways to find a new wife who would desire to enter into the King’s presence even if it would cost her, her life. But as we find out, those who are willing to lose their life for His sake actually find it.
Isa 65:1
"I was sought by those who did not ask for Me; I was found by those who did not seek Me. I said, 'Here I am, here I am,' to a nation that was not called by My name.
Finally, an orphan girl named Esther was found. This orphan girl was cared for by a man named Mordecai. He loved her and watched over her. He became a father to her. Mordecai was with her.
The King’s servant chose this orphan girl and asked her to come before the King. . But she was not yet ready to enter into his presence. She needed to prepare herself.
John 14:16
"And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever--

ReplyDeleteWith the help of the King’s trusted servant, Esther made herself ready to enter into the King’s royal chamber.
Eph 5:26-27
26 that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, 27 that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish.
Esther adored herself with the finest royal perfumes. She would be a glorious wife: without spot or wrinkle. She would be holy and without blemish. She found great favor and grace in the sight of the King. He loved her above all the women. He set a royal crown upon her head and made her his wife.
But an evil person name Haman resisted God’s plan.
Isa 14:12-15
12 "How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How you are cut down to the ground, you who weakened the nations!
13 For you have said in your heart: 'I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation on the farthest sides of the north;
14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High.'
15 Yet you shall be brought down to Sheol, to the lowest depths of the Pit.
He was an enemy of God’s plan - who always opposes the things of God. He is the father of pride. He wanted to exalt Himself to the highest honor. Though Haman’s name means magnificent, he will be brought down to Hell. Haman’s desire to be worshipped consumed him. If only the orphan’s relative, Mordecai, would bow down and worship me,
Matt 4:8-10
8 Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.
9 And he said to Him, "All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me."
10 Then Jesus said to him, "Away with you, Satan! For it is written, 'You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.'"
Mordecai WOULD NOT. bow his knee before the evil one! He worshipped God and Him only did He serve. This evil person was furious. He could find no sin or fault with this righteous man so he was determined to kill Him.

ReplyDeleteHe would build a great gallows of wood to hang this righteous man on. If only I could hand this man upon these gallows of wood for the entire world to see my triumph over this righteous man.
John 12:32
32 "And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all peoples to Myself."
The gallows towered over 75 feet into the air. --- high and lifted up would he hang this righteous man upon it All the peoples of the kingdom would see his triumphant over Mordecai
But Haman did not know the wisdom of God at work. The very device that Haman was planning to use against Mordecai would be used to defeat Haman.
Heb 2:14
…. that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil,
1 Cor 2:8
which none of the rulers of this age knew; for had they known, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.
But as God’s plan unfolds, the very device he was planning to use on this righteous man becomes the instrument of own defeat! The tables are turned! This evil person had no idea of the reversal of fortune nor of God’s wisdom and power. This evil person is cast out of the King’s presence and judgment is executed upon Him with his own device!!!
The evil man’s authority is finished; Judgment is executed upon Haman
But Haman’s plan to kill, steal and destroy still remains in effect throughout the kingdom.
I Jn 3:8
He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.
But praise God, there is a new plan to counteract this lingering evil decree.
With the reversal of fortune, the King honors Mordecai, the queen’s kin with great power and authority. The King takes the signet ring from the defeated, evil man Haman and gives it to the righteous man, Mordecai

ReplyDeleteMatt 28:18
And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.
A transfer of authority and power has taken place and Mordecai gives the command to his servants
Matt 28:19-20
19 "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
20 "teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen.
Mordecai seals a new decree to reverse the evil plan of the defeated enemy. And with haste He sends forth his massagers throughout the kingdom to proclaim His new decree or law.
Wherever the new decree is read, there is rejoicing and happiness
Finally, at the appointed time and on the set day, the new decree is fulfilled and all the enemies of God’s people are destroyed and a new era of gladness and joy are celebrated throughout the Kingdom.
